Introduction:
Most people put off booking physio for far too long. Not because they don’t want help, but because the process feels like a chore. Ring round a few clinics. Leave a voicemail. Wait for a callback that comes three days later. Explain your whole story again. By then, the bad back has turned into a bad month.
It doesn’t have to be like that. If you want to book a physiotherapist who comes to your home, the whole thing can take a few minutes on your phone. In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how it works, what you’ll need to hand, what it costs and what happens once you’ve pressed the button. No surprises.
Before You Book: Do You Need a Referral?
Short answer: no. You don’t need a GP referral to see a private physiotherapist in the UK. You can book directly, whenever you’re ready.
There’s one exception worth knowing. If you plan to claim through private health insurance, some insurers ask for a GP referral first. The NHS explains this in its guide on whether you need a GP referral for private treatment. So if you’re claiming, give your insurer a quick call before you book.
If you’d prefer to go through the NHS, many areas now let you refer yourself to physiotherapy. Waiting times vary a lot depending on where you live. The NHS page on accessing physiotherapy explains your options. Lots of people choose to book a physiotherapist privately simply because they want to start treatment this week rather than in a couple of months.
Home Visit or Online Consultation?
When you book a physiotherapist through FlexAura, you’ll choose between two types of appointment.
Home visit
Your physio comes to you, brings the equipment they need and treats you in your own space. This is best if you need hands-on treatment, you’re recovering from surgery or a stroke, you’re older or less mobile, or you just don’t fancy the trip. Initial home visit costs £110, while subsequent visits are £99 each.
Online consultations
30 minutes of video consultation costs £45. Within those 30 minutes, you will receive advice, assessment, an exercise plan and a follow-up plan, and all of it while relaxing on your sofa. Online consultations are ideal if you have a pretty light issue, need advice quickly, or want to “meet” a physiotherapist first before proceeding to home visits. Many customers start out on an online basis and later switch to home visits.
Unsure about the option? Just go with the one that seems easier to you and your physiotherapist will give their honest opinion on whether the other option would be better.
How to book a physiotherapist: step by step process
Here is what information you will have to provide in our booking form. Prepare to answer these questions and it will take you just a few minutes.
Step 1: Select your appointment type
Choose between a home visit and a video consultation. If you want a home visit, specify whether you want a first home visit, follow-up visit or a 5-session package.
Step 2: Input your information
Please enter your name, email address, and phone number because it is useful for confirming your booking, and it allows the physiotherapist to contact you in case they are delayed.
Step 3: Describe your condition
You will see a box where you can write the details of your injury or illness. You don’t have to use technical terms – for example, “I’ve been having knee problems since I took up running,” or “My mother fell last week and is now afraid of walking” is enough for us to give you the best care.
Step 4: Select an age range
This will help us provide you with a physiotherapist who knows how to treat your age group, be it a teenager who plays sports or a 90-old person who wants to stay steady.
Step 5: Select suitable hours
Choose morning (8am–12pm), afternoon (12pm–5pm), evening (5pm–8pm) or “Anytime – I’m flexible”. We’ll confirm the exact time by email once your physio is assigned.
Step 6: Add your address and postcode
We only match you with physios who can actually reach your area. Tick the consent box so your details can be shared with your physio, and you’re done.
That’s it. You don’t need to enter any card details, and nothing is charged at this stage. You can read more about this part of the process on our book instantly page.
What It Costs (and When You Pay)
We think you should know exactly what you’re paying before you book a physiotherapist, so here it is in plain numbers:
- Online consultation: £45 for a 30-minute video call
- First home visit: £110
- Follow-up home visits: £99 each
- 5-session home visit package: £450 (works out at £90 a session), ideal for ongoing rehab
For single sessions, you pay after your appointment, not before. You can pay by card or bank transfer, or in cash to your physio. The 5-session package is paid as one payment rather than session by session. There are no hidden travel fees on top. Full details are on our pricing page.
Many physios on our platform also accept private health insurance, including Bupa, AXA and Vitality.
What Happens After You Book?
Once your request is in, we match you with an HCPC-registered, DBS-checked physio who covers your postcode and has the right experience for your problem. Matching is usually quick, often within a few hours.
You’ll then get a confirmation by email (and often WhatsApp too) with your appointment time and your physio’s details. Your physio gets yours, so they can call if they’re held up in traffic. Depending on where you live and how busy things are, appointments are often available within a day or two, and sometimes sooner.
If you’d like to choose your own physio rather than be matched, you can search and compare physios by specialisation, location and availability, and read patient reviews before you decide.
How to Get Ready for Your First Visit
Honestly, there’s not much to do. Your physio brings the equipment. A few small things help:
- Clear a space roughly 2m x 2m so you can move freely
- Wear comfortable clothes that let your physio see the area being treated, such as shorts for a knee problem
- Have a list of your medications ready, plus any scan results or hospital letters
- Jot down a few notes: when it started, what makes it better or worse, what you’d like to get back to
- Ask a family member to be there if you’d feel more comfortable
The first visit usually involves a proper chat about your history, a hands-on assessment, some treatment and a set of exercises to keep you going until next time. Our guide on what to expect from a home visit covers it in more detail.
Need to Change or Cancel?
Life happens. You can cancel or reschedule free of charge up to 24 hours before your appointment using the link in your confirmation email. If it’s less than 24 hours before, just send us a WhatsApp message on 07782 610 633 so we can let your physio know straight away.
Booking for Someone Else
A lot of our bookings are made by sons, daughters and partners on behalf of someone they love. That’s absolutely fine. Just use your own contact details so we can reach you, put the patient’s address for the visit and mention in the description box who the appointment is for and anything we should know (hearing difficulties, memory problems, a recent fall). If you can, be there for the first session. It helps everyone, and it means you’ll understand the exercises too.
Common Booking Mistakes to Avoid
After helping lots of people book a physiotherapist, we’ve noticed a few things that slow recovery down before it’s even started. They’re all easy to avoid.
- Waiting until it’s unbearable. Pain that has been around for weeks is usually harder to shift than pain caught early. If something has bothered you for more than a week or two, it’s worth getting it looked at.
- Leaving the description box empty. A sentence or two really does help. Without it, we have less to go on when matching you with the right physio.
- Booking the wrong type of session. If you know you need hands-on treatment, an online call won’t replace it. If you just want quick advice, you may not need a home visit yet.
- Choosing a time you can’t keep. Pick a slot when you’ll genuinely be home and not rushing out. A calm session is a more useful one.
- Forgetting the paperwork. Hospital discharge letters, scan reports and a list of medications all help your physio understand what’s going on.
None of this needs to be perfect. Your physio will fill in the gaps when they see you. But a little thought at the booking stage means more of your first session goes on treatment and less on catching up.
Tips to Get the Most From Your Booking
- Book sooner rather than later. Most problems are easier to treat when they’re caught early.
- Be honest in the description box. The more we know, the better the match.
- Consider the package if you need ongoing rehab. It saves money and keeps things consistent.
- Do your exercises. The work you do between sessions makes the biggest difference.
- Ask questions. Your physio wants you to understand what’s happening and why.
Once treatment starts, you’ll see why so many people prefer to recover at home. And if you want to understand the bigger picture first, our home visit physiotherapy page is a good read.
